Re-Wilding Indiana
Vision Goals & Practice:
- To provide expert veterinary medical and surgical care and rehabilitation for injured and orphaned wildlife in central Indiana, with the goal of eventual release into the wild.
- To help educate the public on how to minimize negative wildlife interactions, and on the value of rehabilitation and release.
- We also seek to educate the next generation of wildlife veterinarians, nurses and rehabilitators through externships, internships, didactic lectures and practical experiences.
For 30 years, the Avian and Exotic Animal Clinic has provided pro-bono medical and surgical care for injured wildlife brought to the clinic by the public and licensed wildlife rehabilitators across Indiana. The Clinic worked with a network of volunteer rehabilitators to provide nursing care for sick and injured wildlife, and for orphans. However, with 2024 bringing close to 1200 wild animals for care, the demand outstripped capacity. Re-Wilding began as the combination of a designated wildlife hospital within Avian and Exotic Animal Clinic and one of the area’s strongest wildlife rehabilitation organizations, Hancock Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation.
Now, as Re-Wilding Indiana, we are powered by a unique partnership of wildlife veterinary staff, licensed rehabilitators, and volunteers that extends our reach throughout Central Indiana with a main rehabilitation center in Fortville, and additional licensed rehabilitators throughout central Indiana.
Our short term goals are to continue to fund the expert care we receive from our veterinary staff as well as provide nutritious species-specific food, enrichment and housing for our residents while they prepare for re-release.
Our long-term goal is to establish a permanent free standing facility for triage and care of wildlife, public education, and expansion of our training and education programs.
